Building Compassion

ADHD_Icons-05.png

1. Empathize with Their Experience

• Imagine how it feels for your child to struggle daily with focus,follow-through, or self-regulation.

• Example: Consider how overwhelming it must be to constantly hear “Try harder” when they’re already giving their best.

2. Practice Active Listening

• Validate their feelings and experiences without judgment.

• Example: If your child says, “I hate homework; it’s too hard,” respond with, “I know it feels tough. Let’s break it into smaller steps together.”

3. Use Positive Framing

• Highlight their strengths to counterbalance frustration with challenges.

• Example: “I see how creative you are in solving problems. Let’s use that skill to tackle this homework.”
